A few designs to go with my new body of work under the title of 'Let it Grow'
I dont think the 'oh do grow away' ones work so well so I'm just going to print the 'let it grow' ones and dog ones in different colours. I will put the 'la la boys' ones in my screen print packs, along with seeds and a business card.

Ruth Green

So, I thought maybe this blog could be used for all types of promotional items, stuff we've come across and want to share as well as our own ideas for promotion, instead of just badges?
Anyhow! Today I have been to King's Heath to a little village fete-type day. Amongst the menagerie of cupcakes, jumble sales, potted plants and clothes I found a little stall belonging to printmaker Ruth Green. She had really nice screen prints and I bought a pack of badges from her. Upon closer inspection I saw there was a postcard and a sticker in the pack too...all this joy for only £1.50!!! Bargain!!
I even saw Chiu there, he was probably trying to do a trade with her.. :D

Hope you're all enjoying your summers x

recycled paper envelopes as badge designs

I came across these badges today which i think is quite a good idea as I personally seem to see a lot of paper go to waste!  The design is literally the insides of envelopes no longer needed, made into the badges!

Zoo Series

First batch of a series of my zoo animals, I thought 5 was a good number so these are the initial 5 I've done, have tested the zebra and udder designs which worked but have now edited more so should now be more effective! But please feel to construct concrit, but if people do like these I hope to do a test of all 5 on monday if it pleases the Chiu man.

They're posted in their badge face preview, but they all carry on the design colour/image to the whole radius, just more effective to present like this.

Cheers!

..interest me. this may end up as a business card but...maybe it works as a badge too? x

Badge Design - What is it?

I had an inkling from my own experience, and from recent submissions on this blog, that bespoke badge designs work much better than using existing images. However, it is important that existing images can be the direct source of inspiration, in other words, it's not necessary to struggle for "new" designs and ideas, but instead you are just re-drawing past work that you feel could be suitable with the focus on what fits best in a 38 mm diameter - how will it look from 2 meters away? as well as from close up?

badges

Lots of stuff -
I made these from old drawings to try it out, but I don't really like the look of any of them!
I can't figure out what it is? (the middle row I might consider):

I made these two from scratch and I like them better

And these were just for fun - I won't be making these, unless to go with my zine project:

But I need to make some badges to show on Tuesday so any feedback would be great,
Thanks!

flood no 01 + Horse in Her Three Eyes

The badge machine is in. After a few initial hiccups it now works like a seasoned pro - Welcome to have a demo when I'm free! Designs should be printed on 80/90 gsm paper, nothing thicker please :)

A few designs

Two pencilly ones, based on my final project, and another one, from some album art I'm designing at the mo.

Badge Design Specifications

One of the easiest ways to understand the format of a badge design is to use the same specifications from the following badges templates:

http://www.bigdogbadges.co.uk/templates.html

http://www.awesomebadges.co.uk/38mm-regular-badges-p-5.html

http://abetterbadge.com/templates.html

use whichever you prefer, read their instructions carefully - i.e. On printing don't print their guidelines! Make sure the image extends to the furthest line.

The machine we have bought is the following:

http://www.buttons.co.uk/index.php?pg=2&m=7

except ours is a 38 mm

My First Go

First go really, I quite like them!

Badge ideas

Yeh I got carried away >.> obviously I wouldn't make them all, I was just trying stuff out!

ideas

badge ideas!

These are just roughies but I was considering a little series of four for the Magpie & Crow story, possibly to sell on Etsy.

(I don't know why but they're coming out very greyed-out and with bits of the border missing when I put the image in blogger, the actual file looks fine on my computer anyone got any ideas?)

To re-use or from scratch? This is the question!

Yes! I think much can be said for both methods!

I think that as you've all committed to exploring the idea of badge design, you should all make the analytical aspect of the design process extremely important:

How does it look from far?
How does it look close up?
Does it represent an aspect which you want to be remembered for?
Is it memorable?
Will the person you send it to want to keep it?
Could it be a series, rather than a random selection of your past drawings?
Is there some link between your badges and your portfolio images, so that the potential client you visit remembers your portfolio?
Could you base the badges on previous drawings, but draw them again specifically as a badge design?
How will you package this badge?
Can you sell it at the artist book fairs?
Could it be a freebie with an artist book / zine? (not really free, as you cost it with the book)

Finally, there is no rush to make the badges! Third years, I think you need to think carefully about the last question as part of your branding, but second years should definitely enjoy taking their time making and analyzing what they can come up with.

Badges Ideas

Howdy ho, I've been experimenting with my badges ideas, and thought i put them up! I plan to make some designs from scratch but have so far used past drawings as possible mock-ups to get a feel of the size and composition constraints. I've picked a varied selection here, so if anyone wants to comment negative/positive it will be appreciated!

hey these are some ideas for badgie wadgies. any comments would be appreciated- if anyone thinks any of them need work feel free to rip into them. thank you :)

skeleton tache

another try with a rough design for skeleton tache

horse design

I'm determined to make some decent looking B&W 25mm badges! Having the ability to make one at a time will make it so much easier to continually modify the designs

here's my first:

Some inspiration- Jenny Goldberg

I've become quite a fan of Jenny Goldberg after reading her book "jellyfist" with Jhonen vasquez, and on her blog I found this video of her a badge so thought others may find it interesting, especially in terms of the scale she's working on to make it hand made!

http://jrgoldberg.com/cunch/?p=498

Also she's done mass printed ones which I imagine the majority of us will do?
